Portrait of Tyler

OVERVIEW

The Portrait of Tyler first came about while I was watching Lollapalooza on TV, where Tyler, the Creator was performing. I was inspired by an image of him squatting, with his shoes becoming the focal point of the structure because of their strong presence in the picture.

MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE

In my beginner’s figure drawing class, I was inspired by a peer’s use of charcoal to create a smudging effect along the body. I took on this approach in my own work, allowing the marks to soften the figure and bring a less polished, more expressive quality to the piece. The materials I used were charcoal, erasers, and a white colored pencil, which together gave me room to explore contrast, depth, and texture.
